About NIPRA

Serving the Church in Austria by uniting Nigerian Catholic priests and religious in faith, fraternity, and mission.

The Nigerian Priests and Religious in Austria (NIPRA) is a non-commercial Catholic association that brings together Nigerian-born Catholic priests, brothers, and sisters serving in dioceses, parishes, chaplaincies, and religious communities across Austria. Rooted in the Gospel and the life of the Church, we share our gifts, cultures, and experiences to serve God’s people with integrity, compassion, and joy.

Our Mission

NIPRA exists to accompany Nigerian priests and religious serving in Austria, to nurture their spiritual and human wellbeing, and to support their pastoral ministries in the local Church. We aim to be a visible sign of communion between Nigeria and Austria, offering our shared heritage and faith in service to the Gospel.

We provide spaces for shared prayer, retreats, ongoing formation, and mutual encouragement, so that each member is strengthened to live their vocation faithfully in the Austrian context.

We build bonds of friendship and solidarity among Nigerian clergy and religious in Austria, creating a network of pastoral and personal support across dioceses and congregations.

We collaborate with bishops, parishes, and religious communities to serve the People of God, especially Nigerian and African communities, and to contribute to the life of the Church in Austria.

Our History

The story of NIPRA in Austria is a story of call, courage, and communion. As more Nigerian priests and religious responded to invitations to serve in Austrian dioceses and congregations, a desire grew for a common home where they could gather, pray, and reflect together on their mission.

Beginnings

In the early years, Nigerian priests and religious serving in Austria met informally for prayer and fellowship. These simple gatherings highlighted the need for a more structured association dedicated to their spiritual and pastoral support.

Formal Establishment

Over time, leaders discerned the value of an organised body representing Nigerian priests and religious in Austria. NIPRA emerged as a recognised association with a clear mission, statutes, and leadership structure, in dialogue with Church authorities.

Growing in Communion

Today, NIPRA brings together members across Austria for regular meetings, liturgies, formation days, and cultural celebrations. The association continues to evolve as it listens to the needs of its members and the call of the Church in Austria.

What We Do

Through prayer, formation, and collaboration, NIPRA serves its members and the wider Church in Austria. Our activities are tailored to the realities of Nigerian priests and religious living and ministering in a new cultural context.

Spiritual Gatherings

Regular days of recollection, retreats, and shared celebrations of the Eucharist and the Liturgy of the Hours for members.

Ongoing Formation

Workshops, study days, and theological reflection on topics such as intercultural ministry, pastoral care, and social teaching.

Pastoral Networking

Building bridges among members serving in different dioceses and communities, and strengthening collaboration with Church leaders.

Cultural Celebrations

Coordinating liturgies and gatherings that honour Nigerian Catholic spirituality, music, and traditions within the Austrian context.

Member Care

Offering practical and pastoral support to members, especially those newly arrived in Austria or facing particular challenges.

Outreach & Witness

Encouraging members to engage in evangelisation, social outreach, and dialogue, sharing the hope of the Gospel with all.
